“Flickermood”

“Flickermood”

A sumptuous exploration of type set to a wonky track by Forss. This is some serious After Effects dedication and I’m loving all the detail that has gone into it including the scratchy, flickery film look. Timed to absolute perfection this goes a long way to prove that it is always better to have your audio track before you start animating. Love the way the type flicks out to a negative on certain beats.

HelloEnjoy

Carlos Ulloa of Papervision fame has recently posted a preview of a site in progress. It’s basically just a fancy welcome teaser page. But is it slick? Once loaded you can pick up and throw the letters around the screen. It’s a really lovely execution done by the master. Check out HelloEnjoy.

The birth of pixel fonts

Pixel font origins

Pixel font origins

As a flash designer you get to be used to creating projects using pixel fonts. These are fonts that can be rendered at incredibly small sizes and are legible without any use of anti-aliasing. But pixel fonts were not born with the age of computers. There is a really interesting post over at Hoefler and Frere-Jones documenting the rise of this type of font in lace books of the Renaissance. The thing with sewing into lace is that you have a lattice or grid of squares to sew into and are limited by the material as to what you can stitch. So there was much work done on how to write fonts into increasingly smaller and smaller grids. Click on the image above to read the full article.

The Comma

A great bit of work here outlining the importance of the smallest punctuation marks: the comma. How a small and seemingly insignificant stroke can have such devastating effect on meaning. Created for the Brazilian Press Association, this work features some tight typographical treatment and works well in delivering the message.

Harvey Milk

There is a lot going on in California at the moment regarding gay rights, as the population is set to vote on Proposition 8 which (if successful) would eliminate the rights of same-sex couples to marry. It is sad to see what one thinks of as a forward thinking state potentially take such a step back in their civil rights. Many people are opposed to ‘prop 8′ most notably Apple who has recently publicly denounced the measure which is great news. But you have to wonder what a person like Harvey Milk would have to say on all this. A man who was one of the first publicly gay men to be elected to office in the United States and ultimately was assassinated based on his sexual orientation. I’ve included the video below because not only is it a great piece of animated typography but it also serves to remind us of the man he was and the very real need for civil equality in our time.

jarratt moody

Oh this is just lovely. Jarratt Moody has devised this awesome animation using only typography to deliver ‘that’ speech from Pulp Fiction. Ok *warning* do not click on this link if you are a bit sensitive to harsh language.
